Major Exploration

If you are working with students who are undecided on a major, see our Majors and Minors page for information on career and major exploration. It includes tips on how to explore programs using the catalog, links to career resources, and insight on choosing a major for students with interests in pre-professional tracks.

Course Equivalencies

The Mason Core is Mason’s general education program. A majority of the Foundation and Exploration courses (two parts of the Mason Core) are taken during a student’s freshmen and sophomore years, so they are a good place for VCCS students to begin their academic planning. You can use the Mason Core-VCCS Equivalency page to see which courses will most likely transfer.

You can use the Transfer Credit Matrix for all currently approved course equivalencies (not just Mason Core).

Academic Planning

See the Academic Planning and Registration page for links to Four-Year plans. These plans can be used as a guide for students to get an overview of course progression through a major, but it is important to keep in mind that they are not prescriptive, and some majors have more flexibility than others.

Prospective transfer students can meet with major advisors prior to matriculation to discuss academic planning. Students can use the Advisor Locator to find contact information. Scheduling will need to be done through email since our appointment scheduler NavigateMason is only available to current Mason students.
