Comments from Students:

I remember going to the Transfer Orientation in 2015,and Mr. Lowery was there sitting with me helping me look through Patriot Web and the possible classes I was going to take. I was having a bit of a difficult time and I was one of the last students in the room. Mr. Lowery stayed with me and the remaining students until we all had our questions and misunderstandings answered. I value someone who gives their full attention to help others and to this day I have always felt grateful to be paired with an advisor like Mr. Lowery. His patience and generosity make him someone I look up to. My time at George Mason has been great and I am grateful that I have an advisor who has helped me on my journey.

Troy is by far the most genuine advisor I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet during my college years. Even though I have only met up with him once, he made me feel like he really cared about my education. He answered all my questions and went above and beyond to help me with making sure I’m on the right track. He didn’t rush me out of his office and warmly welcomed me back whenever I need his help. I’m always hesitant to go see an advisor because they don’t usually help and come off cold but I have such a good experience with Troy, I feel more confident to go and ask for help when I need it.

Ever since my transition into George Mason from NOVA, he has always showed great interest in helping me be as successful as I can be. Helping me figure out what steps I need to go through in order to achieve my goals at Mason. A great listener and great at giving advice, he has shown me that he can see the potential in me that I sometimes may not see in myself. Overall a great academic advisor, happy to have him as mine!

Because of Troy, I am on track to graduate and I have never felt like my coursework was too much to handle. This is due to the fact that he helped me arrange my schedule starting as a freshman so I had a balanced selection of classes. For example, he caused me to think about mixing four and three credit classes and INTS requirements so I wasn’t taking all INTS classes in one semester, which would have been too intense. Also, he is the only advisor I’ve seen that provides consistency! He also went out of his way to help me with the benefits I receive from the VA.

Comments from co-workers/faculty:

I am excited to submit this vote for 2017 Academic Advisor of the Year! I have known Troy for almost three years now, and am proud to call him my friend and colleague. His dedication to students and all things Mason is bundles. He is involved in his department and is always willing to help others when needed. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his passion for student success is amazing. I am proud to recommend him for the 2017 Academic Advisor of the Year! He truly embodies the ideal of Mason advisor.

Regardless of my position or his, Troy has always been a positive constant within my working relationships here at Mason. Aside from the friendship aspect, throughout all of our conversations, his willingness to go above and beyond for his students, as well as for the entirety of the university, is apparent. He is always seeking out ways to better improve upon his practices as an advisor and how he can use the improvements to better serve the students who he works with.

As a faculty member, I teach leadership, and Troy’s actions reflect what it means to be a true leader – someone who relates with others, empowers others, builds trust, encourages, models the way, and challenges. I have been fortunate to see Troy’s work with students up close – both in my witness to his one-on-one interactions and in my witness of his counsel to larger groups. In the Fall of 2016, Troy offered his time to provide an advising and registration info session/workshop to one of my classes – his presence made a deep difference. In fact, the students were so grateful for his time and energy that, after making a class T-shirt for themselves, the one extra shirt was wholeheartedly gifted to Troy for his service. This act alone showed the impact that Troy makes each and every day – he is truly deserving of this award. Troy IS an incredible professional, a wonderful colleague, and a very gifted advisor.
